Survey Says: Social Media, Cyber Fears Dominate PR Media Training and Crisis Communications Trends

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Oct. 21, 2015 — A survey of Public Relations professionals by specialty communications firm CommCore confirms that Social Media is the prime driver of change in Media Training best practices, and that cyber-attacks and hacking are the greatest concerns of crisis communications managers.

The nationwide survey of CommCore’s clients conducted on the occasion of CommCore’s 30th anniversary also indicates that the industry sectors most communicators consider to be at risk for a crisis are Finance, Pharmaceuticals and Food/Agriculture.

After Social Media, the survey reveals that the prevalence of mobile platforms and the decline of traditional news media are other important factors in modifying media training.

Respondents also cited ethical lapses and natural disasters as their biggest crisis concerns after cyber-attacks and hacking.

“The responses reinforce what we know from hard experience,” said CommCore Principal and Executive Vice President Jerry Doyle. “Crisis planning must assume that an attack that compromises confidential information can happen at any time from anywhere, if it hasn’t already happened. Preparation must include all corners of the enterprise, not just communications and PR.”

The full survey can be seen here.
