(Washington, DC, April 25, 2016) – Determining if an incident is an “emergency” or a “crisis” is a crucial step for any organization, CommCore Senior Vice President Nicholas F. (Nick) Peters told a recent seminar on crisis communications. Knee-jerk over-reaction may actually precipitate a crisis when the situation is manageable.

Peters, Jim Moorhead, Managing Director for Public Affairs & Crisis at Burson-Marsteller, and Maureen Donahue Hardwick, partner at Drinker Biddle & Heath were co-panelists on a program “Is It Really a Crisis? How To Define a Crisis, and When To React,” sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America’s National Capital Chapter.

“An organization’s Crisis Response team should represent a cross-section of functions,” Peters said. “Inputs from the C-Suite, legal, HR, IT, IR, security, business or program units, will ensure that the need for speed doesn’t make a bad situation worse. And if it is deemed to be a crisis, then you have everyone on the same page as you move forward with a response in the critical ‘golden hour’.”

Peters, Moorhead and Hardwick shared examples of crisis management and mismanagement and answered questions from the audience consisting of Washington-area PR professionals.
